Ellen Bailey Poems

A Nameless Child

by Ellen Bailey

Our child was born without your name
He was a beautiful bundle of joy
I hid my pride and suffered the shame
And I gave my name to our baby boy

Your name was upon my lips,
When our baby boy was born
But I did not let your name slip
For fear of causing you scorn

I shared our secret with our son;
I did not assign any blame
I told him what you had done
But I did not tell him your name

Our son is now a young man, fully grown
He is very much acclaimed
He has a wonderful family of his own
And he gave them all my name
